Attitudes of a Transformed Heart

Ch. 1: Daniel’s View of God Most High

  • God must give you a new heart and thus the capacity, as well as the desire, to bow before Him. p.1
  • A high and holy view of God is one that sees Him and responds to Him as He is revealed in the Bible. It is a view only God can give you and it changes your life forever. p.3

This is a matter of prayer since God must give us it; we cannot get it on our own but must diligently pray for it.

  • To the extent that their understanding was deficient, their thoughts and beliefs were conformed to the world’s way of thinking. p.2

We must fill the gap where we lack understanding so we are not tempted by the world to adopt their point of view. We do this by prayerfully reading and memorizing Scripture, reading Christian growth books, going to church and bible study. God has shown us how to gain understanding:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Proverbs 9:10

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

         James 1:5

  • 5 wrong views of God: p.2
  1. Santa Claus – if you are good, He will give you the presents you deserve
  2. Angry, mean, hard, and poised to punish
  3. Compassionate who would never send anyone to hell
  4. “inflated view of man” – man chooses God if and when he pleases
  5. all God is concerned about is that we be sincere in whatever we believe and that we do our very best

Consider Shadrach, Meschach and Abednegos position of God in their minds: “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us… but even if He does not.” Daniel 3:16-18. They had faith to believe God could save them from the burning fire but they also understood and accepted that God’s will may be otherwise and it would not change their position of fear and honor for God. Often if God doesn’t do something for me I am tempted to question His goodness.

  • Instead of seeking to have his own needs met, Daniel saw himself there to serve God on God’s terms, no matter the cost. p.9
  • Pray for: God to help us bow before Him, serve Him and honor Him by thinking thoughts about Him that are not conformed to the world’s way of thinking. p.9

Application Questions:

  1. Which mis-view of God do you have or have you held? How does it or how did it affect your relationship with God?
  2. Which of God’s names listed in this chapter is your favorite and why? (Father, God of Gods, Lord of Kings, Most High, King of Heaven)
  3. Can you think of a time when you had to choose obedience to God and risk your personal safety?
