Ch. 4: Our High and Holy God

God Most High is SOVEREIGN:

  1. God is subject to no one – Acts 17:24-25
  2. God rules over all – Psalm 103:19
  3. God’s rule is good news, a welcome relief for those who know Him – Isaiah 52:7
  4. God gives strong warning for those who do not know Him or bow before Him – Psalm 2:10-12
  5. God does as He pleases – Psalm 135:5-6
  6. God (the Lord Jesus Christ) is the head over all authorities – Colossians 2:10
  7. God makes choices and we have no right to criticize Him – Isaiah 45:5-9

God Most High is AT WORK:

  1. God’s work is displayed through His creation – Genesis 2:2; Psalm 19:1
  2. God continues to work in His creation – Psalm 104:5, 10-24
  3. God delights in working in His creation through exercising His loving-kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth – Jeremiah 9:23-24
  4. The Lord Jesus Christcame to earth to accomplish the work of salvation for sinful man – John 17:1-4
  5. God uses circumstances in our life to work for our good – Romans 8:28
  6. God is working now to mature believers – Philippians 1:6; 2:13

God Most High is HOLY:

  • when man is confronted with God’s holiness, he is afraid because he sees his own sin – Isaiah 6:1-5
  1. God is holy. He is set apart, sacred, and pure – Habakkuk 1:13; Psalm 47:8
  2. God’s holiness is the very excellency of His divine nature – Isaiah 6:1-5
  3. As children of God, we are to be holy as He is holy – 1 Peter 1:14-16
    • His standard is unattainable by man apart from God’s cleansing work on our behalf
  4. Only a holy God/man could redeem sinful man from his sin – 2 Corinthians 5:21

God Most High is FAITHFUL:

  1. God is faithful to keep His Word – Numbers 23:19; 2 Timothy 2:13
  2. God’s faithfulness is unlimited – Psalm 36:5
  3. God’s faithfulness is great! – Lamentations 3:22-23
  4. God’s faithfulness is illustrated in keeping His promise to deliver the children of Israel from bondage in Egypt – Deuteronomy 7:7-9
  5. God is faithful in calling His people – 1 Corinthians 1:9
  6. God is faithful to not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear – 1 Corinthians 10:13
  7. God is faithful to forgive the sin that we confess – 1 John 1:9
  8. God is faithful even when He afflcits us – Psalm 119:75
  9. We should accept God as faithful and act upon that knowledge – Hebrews 10:23
  10. God is faithful and we should entrust our souls to Him even amid suffering – 1 Peter 4:19

Application Questions:

  1. For each of the 4 characteristics of God which one is your favorite in each category?
  2. Which one do you struggle to believe and live out in each category?
  3. What does it mean to you to be holy as God is holy? What exactly is holiness and what does that look like living out in your own life? What practical steps do you take to live a holy life?
