Ch. 9: Thoughts and Attitudes

4 Biblical Principles Regarding Right Thinking: (pgs. 129-135)

  1. You must have the right presuppositions about God (Psalm 90:2; 83:18; Isaiah 46:5,9)
  2. You must have a proper regard for God’s Word (1 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:23-25; Hebrews 4:12; Colossians 3:16-17)
    • all people make decisions based on what they believe and what they value. In order for Christians to develop biblical beliefs and values they must first “Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within [them] (Colossians 3:16) through reading, meditating upon, and studying the Scriptures so that what God values and believes will become their frame of reference instead of what the world values and believes
  3. Your mind must be renewed (Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; 1 Peter 1:13)
  4. You must put off wrong thoughts and put on godly thoughts (Ephesians 4:22-24; Matthew 12:34-35; 15:16-20)

Our obligation is to develop our thinking by building the qualities that Paul listed in Philippians 4:8 (pg. 138)

  • TRUE – one that you know to be a fact and reflects reality
  • HONORABLE – worthy of respect and not trivial
  • RIGHT – what is right is spelled out clearly in the Bible
  • PURE – a pure thought does not lead us to lust
  • GOOD REPUTE – do not promote slander
