Ch. 13: The Attitudes of a Loving Heart

  • a person with a loving heart has a desire or acts towards another in a waythat results in wanting the very best for that person p. 205
  • Biblical Principles: pgs. 205-210
    1. We are to love God wholly and our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:35-40)
      • love for God is to overshadow everything we think, say, or do as we honor Him through obedience to His Word – all of His Word, not just some of it
    2. Love is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22)
      • since my response was so contrary to the natural me, I knew it had to be a work of God
    3. Obedience proves love (1 John 5:3)
    4. Our ability to love biblically comes from God and is an evidence of salvation (1 John 4:7, 8, 19)
    5. Jesus’ death on the cross is the supreme example of how love acts (1 John 4:9-10)
    6. Love is a mark of being a Christian and therefore we can have confidence in the day of judgment (1 John 4:17-18)
    7. Our love for God is seen in our love for others (1 John 4:20-21)
    8. We are to love and pray for those who are against us (Matthew 5:43-48)
    9. We are to pursue love (1 Corinthians 14:1)
      • our gracious heavenly Father provides His children every resoure they need to obey His commands and to follow His example
  • Application: pg. 210
    1. If you love God, you put Him first
    2. If you love others, you will be patient with them, kind to them, and demonstrate other responses
  • Putting on love: pgs. 211-215 (from 1 Corinthians 13)
    1. Patient
      • by an act of our wills, we can be patient whether we feel like it or not. It is an active, humble, dependent choice to obey God in this manner, If we do, the Holy Spirit will help us by pouring out a measure of God’s grace
    2. Kind
    3. Not jealous
    4. Does not brag
    5. Is not arrogant
    6. Does not act unbecomingly
    7. Does not seek its own (way)
    8. Is not provoked
    9. Does not take into account a wrong suffered
    10. Does not rejoice in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth
    11. Bears all things
    12. Believes all things
    13. Hopes all things
    14. Endures all things
